Who will do my antenatal care?

One of us will act as your lead midwife (who will be your first port of call) but you will meet both of us during your antenatal period to ensure you have trusted, friendly faces at your side when you are giving birth.

Who will assist me at the birth?

We always jointly attend a homebirth if we possibly can. If a transfer to hospital proves necessary, one of us will stay with you at all times (although hospitals usually require one of their own midwives to be present at the birth).

What happens if something goes wrong?

The idea that things are likely to suddenly go horribly wrong during labour is a myth mostly perpetuated by television dramas. In practice, labour is a measured process and we can normally make a considered and gentle transfer to hospital if necessary - emergencies are extremely rare. We believe that all current research shows that a planned homebirth in a relaxed atmosphere with birth attendants you trust is easily as safe as a hospital birth. However you and your baby's welfare are our highest concern, and we will not hesitate to recommend that you transfer to hospital should the need arise.

Which areas of the country do you cover?

We cover Bedfordshire and surrounding counties: Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire/North London. We will go further afield (up to 75 minutes travel) for a supplement (to cover travel costs).

What does it cost?

There are so many factors involved that we have to charge on an individual basis. Please ring us to discuss.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes, as long as the balance is paid by week 36. (Longer payment terms may be available on request).

Do you have Medical Indemnity Insurance?

No. It is not currently available. (Even if it were, it would probably be prohibitively expensive.) We will discuss this fully at consultation.

My doctor has advised me against a home birth. Should I listen?

This is too vast (and controversial) a subject to cover in a FAQ. Please ring one of us to discuss the issues.
